Virtualization has made compute infrastructure and storage infrastructure an order of magnitude more flexible, yielding huge gains in IT efficiency. However, the network has not achieved the same efficiency gains. Unlike the advancements in compute and storage virtualization, networking has not kept pace, and has become a barrier to achieving the promise of enterprise cloud computing. As enterprise IT continues its transition to the Cloud Era, the data center network is once again taking center stage.

In most use cases involving flash storage deployments, the business environment changes, driving a need for higher-performance storage. However, the case of Epic Systems Corporation software is the opposite—the storage requirements haven’t changed recently, but the options for addressing them have. Epic, a privately-held company founded in 1979 and based in Verona,Wisconsin, makes applications for medical groups, hospitals and other healthcare organizations. Epic software typically exhibits high frequency, random storage accesses with stringent latency requirements. IBM has been working with Epic to develop host-side and storage-side solutions to meet these requirements. Extensive testing has demonstrated that the combination of IBM® POWER8™ servers and IBM FlashSystem™ storage more than meets the performance levels Epic recommends for the backend storage supporting its software implementations—at a cost point multiple times lower than other storage alternatives.

Just “keeping the lights on” in the server room is highly complex and largely inefficient. Maintaining IT infrastructure, system interdependencies, and application interoperability tie up valuable personnel and resources. The old way of simply throwing more hardware capacity at a problem can only serve to increase the complexity and further dampen productivity. In a perfect world, the infrastructure—hardware and software—would have been built as an integrated but scalable unit from the ground up. In our world, though, the best new systems combine independent pieces of IT infrastructure to form simplified computing platforms, freeing up IT to focus on business innovation rather than infrastructure management. Welcome to the new world of IT.

Integrated Computing (IC), also known as Converged Infrastructure, stands to revolutionize everything about IT. IC takes all of virtualization, storage, networking, and compute into a single system and allows total infrastructure oversight through one console. As you can imagine, the improvements in ease of use, agility, and efficiency are quite substantial. This is essential because infrastructure maintenance devours about three-fourths of annual IT budgets. IC changes all of that, delivering high efficiency solutions for the lifecycle of system, reducing costs and freeing up valuable personnel. The evolution of IT awaits.

Overcoming IT’s operational challenges based on infrastructure complexity is a serious issue. Not only is a piecemeal architecture difficult and inefficient to manage, but it is also very expensive when the Total Cost of Ownership is considered. Reducing that complexity not only frees up personnel but also budgetary resources. Converged Infrastructure offers the opportunity for organizations to drastically increase their IT and user productivity at a significantly lower TCO. Improved IT efficiency and agility accelerates time to value by a significant margin. See a simpler, more efficient infrastructure here.

Sponsored by: NEC and Intel® Xeon® processor The goal of ESG Lab reports is to educate IT professionals about emerging technologies and products in the storage, data management and information security industries. ESG Lab reports are not meant to replace the evaluation process that should be conducted before making purchasing decisions, but rather to provide insight into these emerging technologies. Our objective is to go over some of the more valuable feature/functions of products, show how they can be used to solve real customer problems and identify any areas needing improvement. ESG Lab's expert third-party perspective is based on our own hands-on testing as well as on interviews with customers who use these products in production environments. This ESG Lab report was sponsored by NEC Corporation of America. Intel, the Intel logo, Xeon, and Xeon Inside are trademarks or registered trademarks of Intel Corporation in the U.S. and/or other countries.

Every ten to fifteen years, the types of workloads servers host swiftly shift. This happened with the first single-mission mainframes and today, as disruptive technologies appear in the form of big data, cloud, mobility and security. When such a shift occurs, legacy servers rapidly become obsolete, dragging down enterprise productivity and agility. Fortunately, each new server shift also brings its own suite of enabling technologies, which deliver new economies of scale and entire new computational approaches. In this interview, long-time IT technologist Mel Beckman talks to HP Server CTO for ISS Americas Tim Golden about his take on the latest server shift, innovative enabling technologies such as software-defined everything, and the benefit of a unified management architecture. Tim discusses key new compute technologies such as HP Moonshot, HP BladeSystem, HP OneView and HP Apollo, as well as the superiority of open standards over proprietary architectures for scalable, cost-effect

In addition to high reliability and availability, enterprise mission critical applications, data centers operating 24x7, and data analysis platforms all demand powerful data processing capabilities and stability. The NEC PCIe SSD Appliance for Microsoft® SQL Server® is a best-practice reference architecture for such demanding workloads. It comprises an Express 5800 Scalable Enterprise Server Series with Intel® Xeon® processor E7 v2 family CPUs, high-performance HGST FlashMAX II PCIe server-mounted flash storage, and Microsoft® SQL Server® 2014. When compared with the previous reference architecture based on a server with the Intel® Xeon® processor E7 family CPUs, benchmark testing demonstrated a performance improvement of up to 173% in logical scan rate in a data warehouse environment. The testing also demonstrated consistently fast and stable performance in online transaction processing (OLTP) that could potentially be encountered.
