Attacks on financial services institutions are growing in both quantity and sophistication. Our new State of the Internet/Security report studies criminal behavior across this advanced and expansive financial services attack economy: from a popular authentication mechanism for staging credential stuffing attacks to the use of stolen identities to cash out ill-gotten gains. The report identifies leading DDoS and application-layer attack vectors, lucrative phishing variants, and how criminals stage decoy attacks to distract from their real targets. Attacks that prove successful in financial services often move on to other industries. Download the report, and see what petabytes of data tell us.

Traditional email-security defenses aren’t enough anymore. In today’s rapidly evolving threat environment, to stop email-borne threats, you must effectively defend against phishing and other potentially-devastating social-engineering attacks. These sophisticated threats are often able to bypass defenses using back-door techniques, including email spoofing, spear phishing and personal email fraud to penetrate network defenses and wreak havoc. Here’s a total email-protection strategy that can help radically reduce an organization’s susceptibility to attacks.

The WannaCry ransomware attack in May 2017 crippled the UK’s National Health Service (NHS) and disrupted a range of organizations across 150 countries. Despite being a relatively unsophisticated attack, WannaCry was able to make such a global impact due to preventable vulnerabilities that had largely gone unaddressed. There were many more attacks in 2017, including high-profile breaches at Uber and Equifax, where heeding cyber-security recommendations may have reduced the impact and fallout. The scale and sophistication of cyber-attacks is not slowing down – ranging from phishing scams to cryptocurrency-based cyber-attacks, to statesponsored attacks on industrial control systems. These attacks present an ever growing challenge and serve as a reminder that organizations cannot afford to be complacent in the face of cyber threats. Malware has changed considerably since the early PC viruses appeared more than 25 years ago. Today, it evolves so quickly that many customers find staying ahead of the latest threat nearly impossible. If the explosion in malware variants weren’t enough, sophisticated client-side attacks and advanced persistent threats (APTs) target victims in ways that evade traditional security measures. The question isn’t whether your network will be attacked with advanced malware. The question is when it will happen and how you will respond. Advanced malware is changing the way security is managed.

Every enterprise has to find a balance between security and the ability to carry on conducting business freely. This short guide is about finding that balance. By following some basic principles, there's no reason you can't let legitimate business email move into, out of and within your enterprise while stopping the things that cause damage: viruses, spam, spyware, trojans, phishing, Denial of Service attacks, the loss of sensitive data and the collection of illegal, immoral and just plain offensive material.

Of all the industries targeted by cyber-attackers, financial services is one of the most attractive. As noted bank robber Willie Sutton once said, “Go where the money is … and go there often.” That, it seems, is what cybercriminals are doing, launching malware, Trojans, spear phishing and ransomware attacks at banks and institutions to compromise networks and gain access to valuable data. Phishing is defined by the Financial Services Technology Consortium (FSTC) as a broadly launched social engineering attack in which an electronic identity is misrepresented in an attempt to trick individuals into revealing personal credentials that can be used fraudulently against them. In short, it’s online fraud to the highest degree. Although it’s been around for years, phishing is still one of the most common and effective online scams. The schemes are varied, typically involving some combination of spoofed email (spam), malicious software (malware), and fake websites to harvest personal information from unwitting consumers. The explosive rise of mobile devices, mobile applications, and social media networks has given phishers new vectors to exploit, along with access to volumes of personal data that can be used in more targeted attacks or spear phishing. The fact that phishing attacks are still so common highlights their efficacy and reinforces the need to implement comprehensive phishing and response plans to protect organizations. An effective phishing protection plan should focus on four primary areas: Prevention, Detection, Response, and Recovery. High-level recommendations for each of the four areas are outlined in this whitepaper.

Spam looks like a simple enough issue until you have to try to define it: after all, we all think we know it when we see it. Most people have a working definition along the lines of “email I don’t want.” While that’s perfectly understandable, it is difficult to implement technical solutions based on such a subjective definition. Read this paper to learn why SPAM is more than just unwanted email.

The aim of this paper is to reduce some of the confusion around the workings of AV technology, and to clarify what is realistic to expect from AV protection, particularly heuristic analysis.

Cybercriminals have been upping their game this year; the use of file-less attacks with macros and PowerShell scripts to evade preventive defenses and sandboxes mean that they are getting better than ever at using phishing, social engineering and drive-by techniques to gain initial footholds in private domains – and once they arrive, they are often avoiding detection for extended periods of time. Between April and July 2018, Fidelis interviewed over 580 security professionals from around the globe to understand how they are shifting their detection strategies and how confident organizations are in their ability to not only prevent targeted attacks – but root out threats that have by-passed traditional preventive defenses.
