Advanced evasion techniques, or AETs, are delivery mechanisms used to disguise advanced persistent threats (APTs) and permit them to slip through network security undetected. AETs work by splitting up malicious payloads into smaller pieces, disguising them, and delivering them simultaneously across multiple and rarely used protocols. Once inside, AETs reassemble to unleash malware and continue an APT attack.

The Dyre family of banking malware is back in the news after researchers recently observed that the malware incorporated tricks to avoid detection in malware sandboxes. Previously, Dyre was most notable for targeting high value bank accounts, including business accounts, and incorporating sophisticated social engineering components to overcome the 2-factor authentication used by most banks.

Recent research from Kaspersky has revealed a massive criminal campaign that was able to infiltrate more than 100 different banks and steal upwards of $1 billion from the affected institutions. Kaspersky dubbed this operation the Carbanak APT due to a connection between the malware used in the attacks and the now infamous Carberp banking botnet. You may recall the headlines in 2013 that revealed the Carberp source code had been leaked into the wild, making it accessible to virtually any would-be criminal group that may want it. The accessibility of Carberp source code could easily have provided a starting point for the Carbanak as they built their malware.

In today’s Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) world more than a few IT managers have lost sleep over the thought of an employee device, loaded with sensitive company data, falling into the wrong hands. Lookout commissioned Forrester Consulting to conduct a national survey of IT managers in the Fall of 2013 that uncovered substantial security concerns related to mobile devices, especially around malware and data loss. Ultimately, the survey revealed that IT managers do not believe existing security solutions can adequately address the mobile security challenges faced by businesses today.

Malware that encrypts a victim’s data until the extortionist’s demands are met is one of the most common forms of cybercrime. And the prevalence of ransomware attacks continues to increase. Cybercriminals are now using more than 50 different forms of ransomware to target and extort money from unsuspecting individuals and businesses. Ransomware attacks are pervasive. More than 4,000 ransomware attacks happen every day, and the volume of attacks is increasing at a rate of 300 percent annually. According to an IDT911 study, 84 percent of small and midsize businesses will not meet or report ransomware demands. No one is safe from ransomware, as it attacks enterprises and SMBs, government agencies, and individuals indiscriminately. While ransomware demands more than doubled in 2016 to $679 from $294 in 2015, the cost of remediating the damage and lost productivity is many multiples higher.
